SAN FRANCISCO, September 26, (THEWILL) – Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday stormed the National Assembly complex to notify the Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, on the petition the electoral body received from his constituents to recall him.
The electoral officials however did not meet with Melaye who was at the time of their arrival, attending a closed session of the upper chamber of the national assembly.
None of the aides of the lawmaker was around throughout the period that the INEC officials waited in front of the office.
After waiting without the hope of seeing him, they dropped four ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags containing the documents before leaving.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had asked INEC to serve Melaye with the recall notice and copies of the documents signed by his constituents.
But Melaye on Monday stated that the 90-day deadline set for INEC by Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) has expired.
The embattled lawmaker also alleged that it was only after several attempts at his life had failed that “they” resorted to this sham process of recall.
