October 5, (THEWILL) – The Indonesian football organisation has revealed that two officials from Arema FC have been permanently barred from the game as a result of the weekend stadium stampede that left at least 125 people dead.
Erwin Tobing, a member of the discipline commission at the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) said: “Abdul Haris, as the chief match organiser, and Suko Sutrisno, as match security coordinator, will not be allowed to get involved in football activities for life.”
Arema was also given a 250 million rupiah (16,400 dollars) fine by PSSI in addition to a season-long ban from hosting matches at the Kanjuruhan Stadium of “The Mad Lions”, as the team is nicknamed in the Liga 1 of professional domestic football in Indonesia.
Thousands of spectators flooded the field when rival East Java club Persebaya Surabaya defeated hosts Arema FC 3-2, and chaos ensued. As police attempted to disperse the pitch intruders, fans fled for the exit gates resulting in a stampede that left casualties in its wake.
