September 23, (THEWILL) – Temilade Openiyi, aka Tems, has opened up on her past struggle and how poverty dealt with her.
The singer made this known in an interview with British GQ. According to her, she used to steal food just to survive.
She added that she was so hopeless and broke then that she had low self esteem.
She used to go to her aunty’s place just to collect food that she would take home.
Tems revealed that she didn’t consider her voice to be a blessing as many people are equally talented too.
“There were times when I was so broke, I was broke and hopeless. I used to steal food. I used to go to my aunty’s place just so she could give me food that I would take home.
“I just felt like, what is the point of me existing right now. You have to remember those times. Because that person doesn’t exist anymore.
“I didn’t have self esteem. I didn’t think I was pretty. I didn’t even think of my voice as anything.
“I just thought there are so many people that can sing. I’m not a model, I don’t dance, but whatever chance I have, I’ll take it.
“Even if I end up singing under a bridge somewhere, I’ll be the best under the bridge singer ever”, she stated.
