April 25, (THEWILL) – Former Boston Celtics coach, Ime Udoka, is set to become the next head coach of the Houston Rockets, according to sources monitored by THEWILL.
The 45-year-old will replace Stephen Silas, who was let go after three seasons. Udoka’s hiring comes after the Rockets reportedly considered a list of eight potential candidates, including ex-Raptors coach, Nick Nurse, former Lakers coach Frank Vogel, and Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin.
Udoka’s credentials make him an ideal fit for the Rockets, who are in a rebuilding phase. He is known for his ability to connect with both young and veteran players, while also commanding respect in the locker room. As a defensive-minded coach, Udoka’s aggressive and creative style of play helped the Celtics make it to the NBA Finals in his first year as head coach.
Udoka’s appointment comes as the Rockets look to bounce back from a tough few seasons. The team has not made it to the playoffs since the 2019/2020 season and needs a leader, who can bring organisation and real leadership to their young, inexperienced roster.
Udoka’s experience and winning mentality could be just what the Rockets need to turn things around and get back on track to become contenders once again.
