Hamstring Concern For Iwobi After Everton Slump To Heavy Villa Defeat

August 20, (THEWILL) – Everton manager, Sean Dyche, has revealed that midfielder Alex Iwobi suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s 4-0 loss to Aston Villa in the English Premier League on Sunday.

The Nigerian international was named in Everton’s starting lineup but had to be substituted in the 51st minute after going down with a leg injury. He was seen heading down the tunnel with a member of Everton’s medical staff.

According to Dyche, tests will be conducted over the next few days to determine the severity of Iwobi’s hamstring problem. The injury comes at an inopportune time for both Everton and the Nigerian national team.

With Everton struggling to get up to speed in the 2023/2024 campaign, the loss of Iwobi for any period of time will be a big blow. For Nigeria, Iwobi had been expected to be called up for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against São Tomé and Príncipe, which is now looking very unlikely.

In the match itself, Aston Villa raced to a 2-0 lead within the first 25 minutes through goals from John McGinn and Douglas Luiz. Leon Bailey made it 3-0 in the 51st minute before a late goal from substitute Jhon Durán completed the 4-0 rout.
