February 16, (THEWILL) – Formula One champion, Lewis Hamilton, has vowed that he will not be silenced by the FIA, in spite of the governing body’s ban on drivers making political comments or statements.
Speaking at the launch of his team’s new car at Silverstone, the British driver said that nothing would stop him from speaking his mind on issues he was passionate about, despite the threat of penalties, including potential points deductions.
Hamilton is not alone in his opposition to the FIA regulation. A number of drivers, including the current world champion, Max Verstappen, and McLaren’s Lando Norris, have expressed their willingness to defy the ban, even if it means being fined.
The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, which represents F1 drivers, also voiced its dissatisfaction with the ruling. The FIA has yet to clarify what specific restrictions the regulation will impose on drivers, but it has promised to issue guidance in the near future.
However, with the first race of the season due to take place in Bahrain on March 5, the governing body is facing concerted opposition from drivers who are united in their rejection of any restrictions on their freedom of speech.
