May 03, (THEWILL) – Manchester City have climbed back to the top of the English Premier League after a comfortable 3-0 win over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.
The victory was spearheaded by Norwegian sensation, Erling Haaland, who set a new EPL goal-scoring record with his 35th goal of the campaign, surpassing the previous mark held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.
Nathan Ake had put City ahead on 50 minutes, before Haaland’s chip over West Ham goalkeeper, Lukasz Fabianski and a deflected Phil Foden volley secured the win. City are now one point clear of Arsenal at the top of the table, with a game in hand, and seem to be cruising towards their fifth title in six years.
Although missing key player, Kevin De Bruyne, through injury, City posed a major threat with Haaland’s lethal finishing always a concern for the West Ham defence. City’s performance was not their most energetic, but they were able to take one step closer to securing a treble.
The victory came on the 25th anniversary of one of the lowest points in City’s history, when they were relegated to the third tier of English football. However, the contrast with the team now is remarkable. With Haaland in such electrifying form, City look like the team to beat this season. Their next match is on Saturday, where they will face Leeds United. Meanwhile, West Ham will play against Manchester United on Sunday.
