October 26, (THEWILL) – English Premier League champions Manchester City took a big step towards the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with a 3-1 victory away at Young Boys on Wednesday night.
The slippery synthetic surface at the Wankdorf Stadium aside, City took a second-half lead through defender Manuel Akanji. However, the Swiss side equalised brilliantly when Meschack Elia lobbed goalkeeper Ederson Moraes.
The reigning English title holders refused to be deterred and retook the lead midway through the second half after Erling Haaland converted a penalty. After Julian Alvarez’s goal was struck out by VAR, the Norwegian striker secured the three points late on with a composed finish to make it 3-1.
The win means City have now won three out of three matches in Group G. They could confirm their place in the last 16 for an 11th straight season if they can follow up with another victory over Young Boys at home in two weeks.
While the artificial pitch and heavy rain provided tricky conditions, it was an entertaining encounter with chances at both ends. City ultimately had too much quality and capitalised on their opportunities to earn a vital away victory.
