Gwoza: Boko Haram Seizure Has Displaced 11, 442 Persons – NEMA

SAN FRANCISCO, August 21, (THEWILL) – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Thursday that the recent seizure of Gwoza, a Borno town, by Boko Haram has displaced no fewer than 11,442 persons who are currently taking refuge at two internally displaced camps in neighbouring Adamawa State.

Making the disclosure in a statement was the North-East zonal information officer of the agency, Mallam AbdulKadir Ibrahim.

According to the statement, there were 6,566 persons registered in Madagali and 4,876 in Mubi, both internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Adamawa State as at Thursday.

The statement however said the agency has moved relief materials to the camps. It also noted that “Notwithstanding the recent attack of the mobile training school which is less than 20 kilometres away from Madagali town, officials of NEMA North East Zonal office led by the Zonal Coordinator Alhaji Muhammed Kanar were in Central Primary School in Madagali town, Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State to deliver relief items provided by NEMA to victims displaced by insurgents attacks from Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.”

The statement also disclosed that “The distribution will continue tomorrow (Friday) in Mubi where 4,876 IDPs from Gwoza have been registered at Lamorde Primary and Day Secondary School IDPs camp where needed assessment was conducted in preparation for tomorrow’s exercise.”

According to the statement, the North-East zonal coordinator is expected to participate in the handing over of relief items provided by the wife of the President, Dame Patience Jonathan, on behalf of the Director General of NEMA, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi, in Mubi.

He listed other areas where the relief operation is expected to be delivered to include Askira Uba and Lassa where NEMA has identified some internally displaced persons.
