Gunmen Kill Soldiers, Civilian In Anambra

September 29, (THEWILL) – At least four army officers and a civilian have been reported killed, following an attack in Umunze community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Sources said some unidentified gunmen stormed the area around 1pm and opened fire on the soldiers who were in their stationary vehicle.

“Just this afternoon, we got security report that gunmen attacked the soldiers at the bank area. They didn’t rob the bank, they just killed the soldiers, four of them, and one civilian and drove off”, the source said.

Although a trending video showed three victims, one of the voices in the video said that one army officer was lying in the nearby drainage channel.

The video also showed that the army patrol vehicle was riddled with bullets even as some of the glasses were broken.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident, however, could not give the actual number of the casualties.

“There was a shooting close to the Zenith Bank in Umunze, but the details have not been received”, he said, adding that the command had deployed security operatives to secure the area.

However, a source, who witnessed the incident said, “It was terrible. The shooting was so much that the banks and shops closed immediately, while motorists turned back and drove in opposite directions.

“It was as if the gunmen laid ambush for the soldiers who were driving along the Umunze-Umunneochi road. Nobody saw any sign of the presence of the gunmen before the shooting started.

“Some of us who were close to the bank ran for our dear lives. The gunmen must have taken the soldiers unawares, which must be why they were able to kill them.”
