Guinea’s Military Govt Appoints UN Diplomat As Prime Minister

October 07, (THEWILL) – Guinea’s military leader has named former civil servant and United Nations official, Mohamed Beavogui, as Prime Minister to oversee the country’s transition to civilian rule following last month’s coup.

Beavogui, 68, has a notable career in development, much of it in the United Nations, having served as U.N. Undersecretary-General in charge of the Pan-African Risk Management Mutual in New York.

He also held other positions within the body’s International Fund for Agricultural Development and Food and Agriculture Organization.

Col. Doumbouya announced Beavogui’s appointment via a decree read on state TV late Wednesday.

The PM is related to Diallo Tellia -a former Guinean Diplomat- who served as the first Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

Leader of the Guinean coup, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya was himself last Friday sworn in as the interim President.

He is barred from contesting future elections under plans to restore civilian rule and promised to organise free, credible and transparent elections, although no timetable has been worked out.

A senior international civil servant Mohamed Beavogui will serve as Prime Minister in a government that will see a political transitioning programme restore civil rule to the West African nation after last month’s coup.

As Guinea’s transitional Prime Minister, Beavogui will be responsible for coordinating government action and implementing the transition charter that aims to work toward a civilian government.

Guinea’s junta on Sept. 5 overthrew President Alpha Conde, whose popularity declined after his controversial third-term bid on the claim that term limits did not apply to him.

The West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, suspended military-ruled Guinea’s membership and called for the junta to release the 83-year-old Conde, whose exact whereabouts remain unknown.
