December 06,(THEWILL) – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has responded angrily after Sky Sports pundits, Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards suggested his team were becoming complacent after a recent dip in form.
The current English Premier League champions have won three consecutive league titles from 2018 to 2022, and five of the last six, putting together one of the most dominant runs in English football history. However, draws against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham in their last three games have seen them leapfrogged by Arsenal and in third with a match at hand.
In Sky’s coverage of City’s recent slip-ups, Neville raised the prospect that Guardiola’s all-conquering team were growing complacent with their success and taking their foot off the gas. Carragher and Richards echoed these sentiments on air.
An irritated Guardiola pointed out in response that Neville had never managed to win 4 league titles in a row, even with legendary manager Alex Ferguson at the helm of Manchester United. He also noted that Carragher and Richards had limited personal successes during their playing careers compared to his current squad.
The Manchester City boss argued that winning consecutive leagues is an exceptionally rare achievement, with only five teams in history ever recording a “three-peat”.
The longest title-winning streak in the fiercely competitive 135-year history of English league football belongs to Huddersfield Town, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United (twice), and the present Manchester City side, each achieving three consecutive victories.
