Integration gives GTCO access to both sides of digital transactions, from consumers to merchants.
October 30, (THEWILL) – Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has integrated Google Pay into the payment services of two subsidiaries, GTBank and HabariPay, enabling customers and businesses to use the service from its launch in Nigeria.
Under the arrangement, GTBank customers can add eligible debit cards to Google Wallet and use Google Pay for online transactions locally and internationally.
At the same time, merchants using Squad, the payment gateway operated by HabariPay, can accept Google Pay at checkout.
The integration gives GTCO a presence on both sides of digital payments: consumers making purchases and businesses receiving payments.
For GTBank customers, the process involves adding an eligible debit card to Google Wallet through an Android device or Google Account.
Once registered, customers can select Google Pay at online checkout and authenticate transactions without repeatedly entering card numbers, expiry dates or security codes.
Google Pay uses digital tokens in place of actual card numbers, reducing merchants’ exposure to sensitive card information.
The service can be used on online platforms that accept Google Pay, including subscription services, travel booking websites, food delivery platforms and digital service providers.

Squad merchants gain access to international customers

On the merchant side, Google Pay has been added to Squad’s checkout interface alongside existing payment options, including cards, bank transfers, USSD, direct bank payments and buy-now-pay-later services.
The feature is activated by default for Squad merchants, although businesses can disable it manually.
Merchants configured to accept international transactions can also receive payments from Google Pay users outside Nigeria, potentially widening their reach to international customers and Nigerians in the diaspora.
Managing Director of HabariPay, Eduofon Japhet, said the integration would reduce the number of steps customers need to complete online purchases.
She noted that customers could pay with cards already saved to Google Wallet without requiring merchants to undertake additional integration work.
GTCO targets fewer abandoned online payments

GTCO Group Chief Executive Officer, Segun Agbaje, said the initiative was designed to address friction in online transactions, particularly purchases abandoned during checkout.
“Most failed online payments are not refused; they are abandoned. Somewhere along the way, the customer gives up, and the business never learns about the sale it lost,” Agbaje said.
He added that the integration allows GTBank customers to make payments while businesses using Squad can receive them through the same payment ecosystem.
The move expands GTCO’s digital payment offering as financial institutions and payment providers compete to simplify online transactions and improve merchant acceptance.
GTCO operates across Africa and the United Kingdom, with interests in banking, payment processing, funds management and pension administration.
Its payments subsidiary, HabariPay, provides merchant services through Squad, including payment gateways, payment links, virtual accounts and point-of-sale solutions.
