BEVERLY HILLS, June 13 (THEWILL) – Friends in the Gap Advocacy Initiative (FGAI), a legislative advocacy, monitoring and lobby group, has congratulated the newly-elected President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, on their ascension to the two exalted offices of the National Assembly.
The group in separate letters to the two Presiding Officers, signed by the Executive Director, George Oji, described their elections as well-deserved and a reflection of the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians as well as the change mantra that most Nigerians desire.
It also expressed the hope that the election of the two lawmakers would usher in a new Senate and House of Representatives, which would deepen legislative independence and ensure that the executive arm of government is held accountable.
While extending its hands of fellowship, the group pledged to cooperate with the new leadership of the National Assembly.
It in addition, it promised to engage the legislature in ways that would ensure that the lawmakers live up to their constitutional mandates to the people.
The statement reads: “It is our position that your election is very well deserved, and it reflects the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians, as well as in line with the general change mantra that most Nigerians crave.
“We also believe that your tenure will usher in a new Senate, which will deepen legislative independence and continually hold the executive arm of Government accountable to the Nigerian people.
“On our part as a civil society organisation, we extend our hands of fellowship and promise our cooperation with your administration.
“We also pledge our readiness to engage the parliament in ways that will ensure that the lawmakers live up to their constitutional responsibilities to the Nigerian citizens.”
