March 16, (THEWILL) – Kenneth Griffin, a multi-billionaire hedge fund manager, and the Ricketts family, owners of the Chicago Cubs MLB team, are planning a joint effort to buy English Premier League side, Chelsea FC.

Currently, there are an estimated 200 investors following the situation of the club sale closely, with the intention to acquire it, and interested parties have been mandated to submit proposals by Friday.

A blockbuster bid from a partnership led by Griffin and the Ricketts family, is expected to be lodged before this deadline.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The Ricketts Family, owners of the Chicago Cubs, can confirm they will be leading an investment group that will make a formal bid for Chelsea Football Club this Friday.

“As long-time operators of an iconic professional sports team, the Ricketts Family and their partners understand the importance of investing for success on the pitch, while respecting the traditions of the club, the fans and the community.

“We look forward to sharing further details of our plans in due course.”

The Ricketts family has presided over a successful period in the Cubs’ history, with the team winning their first World Series in over a century in 2016, while Griffin is estimated to be worth over $26 billion by Forbes.

That wealth base is more than any other reported interested party, even though Griffin has no prior experience in sports investment.

Meanwhile, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the owner of a gold mine in Ghana, has indicated interest in purchasing Chelsea, citing the club’s impact and significance in Africa as factors for a potential bid.

A Boasiako spokesperson was quoted as saying: “Bernard Antwi Boasiako is exploring a potential offer for Chelsea. Discussions with various parties involved in the sale have taken place.

“Chelsea has a lasting legacy in Africa, players like Didier Drogba and Michael Essien are legends of the club; the opportunity to enhance the club’s reputation in Africa is a very tempting prospect. Restoring stability and ensuring there are no job losses are among the priorities.”
