February 03, (THEWILL) – Manchester United confirmed on Thursday, that they will conduct an internal investigation following the dropped charges against young forward, Mason Greenwood.
THEWILL recalls that the 21-year-old was suspended by the club after being arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault. However, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that all charges were dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new material.
In their reaction to the case drop, United issued a statement that read: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”
Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, GMP’s Head of Public Protection, had emphasised the police force’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting victims. The Crown Prosecution Service also added that they have a duty to keep cases under review and will encourage potential victims to report to the police. They added that they will prosecute where the legal test is met.
Greenwood is under contract with the Man Utd until 2025 but will not return until the internal investigation is complete.
