May 4, (THEWILL)- Fast-rising singer, Goodnews Emuemu, aka Gnewzy, has been released by his abductors after six days in their custody.
Gnewzy was abducted along Eklat Road in Ughelli, Delta State while heading home from a show.
Eric Many Records, the artist’s music label, confirmed the abduction, saying Obas9ice, his manager, narrowly escaped.
The abductors were said to have contacted Dilly Umenyiora, the record label’s CEO, via mail, demanding a $200,000 ransom.
Umenyiora, in a statement, confirmed the abducted singer had regained freedom, saying the label paid part of the ransom.
He, however, called out the police force over minimal support.
Umenyiora further disclosed that Gnewzy is receiving medical care to enhance his recovery.
“We would like to provide further details regarding the recent kidnapping incident involving our artist, Gnewzy, who has now been released after 6 harrowing days in the den of kidnappers.
“During negotiations for Gnewzy’s release, part of the ransom was paid by Eric Many Records.
“While we are grateful for the efforts of the police in securing Gnewzy’s release, we must acknowledge that there were some irregularities in the handling of the situation.
“The police response and support were minimal, leaving much to be desired in efficiency and effectiveness.
“Eric Many Records would like to express our gratitude to the officers who diligently played their part,” the statement read.
Gnewzy’s release comes a few days after his mother appealed to the abductors to free him while disclosing he is an only child.
