September 22, (THEWILL) – The German Football Association (DFB) has announced the appointment of Julian Nagelsmann as the new head coach of the national team.
Nagelsmann will take charge ahead of the Euro 2024 tournament, which Germany will host. The decision comes after the DFB parted ways with previous manager, Hansi Flick, following a poor run of results. Germany was knocked out at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has won just four of their last 13 matches.
The 35-year-old Nagelsmann takes over from Flick for the second time in his career having replaced him at the Bavarian club Bayern Munich in 2021. Nagelsmann expressed his excitement about leading Germany on home soil at Euro 2024.
The DFB reportedly considered Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, for the position but he stated his commitment to remaining at his current club for the foreseeable future. As THEWILL reported, Nagelsmann previously held talks with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year but terms could not be agreed.
Germany will play friendlies against the USA and Mexico in October before a final warm-up match against Austria in November. Nagelsmann’s first major tournament will be Euro 2024 where the pressure will be on to perform in front of the home fans.
