Gavi, Joselu, Torres Score As Spain Thrash Cyprus 6-0

September 12, (THEWILL) – Spain earned a comfortable 6-0 victory over Cyprus on Tuesday evening, to better their Euro 2024 qualification chances.

Despite losing their opening match against Scotland, La Roja have bounced back impressively, thrashing Georgia 7-1 last week before dismantling Cyprus in Granada. They took the lead in the 18th minute when Gavi converted a cross from Nico Williams. Mikel Merino then headed home to double Spain’s advantage before Alvaro Morata’s goal was struck off after a VAR review.

Joselu got Spain that third goal after the interval, before two goals from substitute Ferran Torres, both sides of an Alex Baena debut goal, completed the rout. With 13 goals in their last two matches, Spain have emphatically answered any questions about their attacking quality.

THEWILL recalls that coach Luis de la Fuente came under pressure after the opening defeat to Scotland, but his position now looks far more secure. He gave Baena the chance for his senior debut as a late substitute and the 22-year-old Villarreal midfielder found the net to justify his inclusion. Despite losing Williams to injury in the first half, Spain were rarely troubled by the Cypriots.

The victory leaves Spain second in Group A, six points behind Scotland but with a game in hand. Their qualification hopes remain in their own hands as attention turns to forthcoming matches against Scotland and Norway in October.
