September 30, (THEWILL) – The University of Oxford has retained its position as the world’s highest-ranked university for an 11th consecutive year in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, released on September 30, 2026.
The edition ranks 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, assessing research-intensive institutions on teaching, research, international outlook and links with industry.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology remains second, finishing just 0.1 point behind Oxford. American universities occupy seven places in the top ten, with British institutions taking the other three.

Stanford climbed from joint fifth to joint third, while Cambridge moved from joint third to fifth. Yale advanced from tenth to share ninth place with Berkeley. The ties mean there are no separately assigned fourth or tenth positions.
Outside the top ten, China’s Tsinghua University rose to 11th, overtaking Switzerland’s ETH Zurich. The National University of Singapore entered the top 15, bringing the number of Asian institutions in that group to three for the first time.
What the Rankings Measure
Times Higher Education evaluates universities across five areas. Teaching carries a weight of 29.5%, research environment 29%, research quality 30%, international outlook 7.5% and industry 4%.
Together, research environment and research quality account for 59% of the overall score. The table therefore places considerable weight on an institution’s research performance, alongside its teaching environment and other activities.
For Nigerian students considering applications abroad, the overall ranking offers a starting point for comparing institutions. Course content, accreditation, tuition, living costs and available funding still require separate checks.
A university’s position cannot tell an applicant how much a particular degree will cost or which scholarships they can secure. The best use of the list is to build a shortlist, then examine what each university offers for the course and budget in question.
