September 11, (THEWILL) – The Olympic Games have travelled across continents for more than a century, turning cities around the world into temporary capitals of global sport.
Since the first modern Olympics were held in Athens in 1896, the Games have been staged in countries with vastly different climates, economies and sporting traditions.
The Summer and Winter Olympics have also allowed countries to compete for hosting rights based on very different strengths, from major metropolitan infrastructure to mountain terrain suited to winter sports.
Some nations, however, have become far more familiar with the Olympic spotlight than others.
The United States remains the country that has hosted the most Olympic Games, while France, Japan and Italy have also built impressive records.
With the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina now added to the history books and Los Angeles preparing to host the Summer Games in 2028, the Olympic hosting map continues to evolve.
Here are the countries that have hosted the most Olympic Games.
United States — 8 Olympic Games
The United States leads the world in Olympic hosting, with eight editions of the Games staged across four different cities.
The country has hosted four Summer Olympics and four Winter Olympics, making it one of the few nations with extensive experience in both versions of the event.

The United States will extend its record when Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics, giving the country a ninth Olympic Games overall. The IOC awarded Los Angeles the 2028 Games in 2017.
Los Angeles will also become the first US city to host the Summer Olympics three times.
France — 6 Olympic Games
France has hosted six Olympic Games, combining three Summer Olympics in Paris with three Winter Olympics in the French Alps.
Paris has become one of the most experienced Olympic cities after hosting in 1900, 1924 and 2024.

France is already guaranteed another Olympic appearance on the hosting calendar, with the French Alps selected to host the 2030 Winter Olympics.

Japan has hosted four Olympic Games, with Tokyo accounting for two Summer editions and the country’s northern and mountainous regions providing the backdrop for two Winter Games.

Tokyo 2020 was famously postponed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually taking place in 2021.
Japan had also been awarded the 1940 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the 1940 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, but both Games were cancelled before they could be staged because of the Second World War.
Italy — 4 Olympic Games
Italy moved into the group of countries with four Olympic Games after hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.
The country has now staged two Summer Olympics and two Winter Olympics.

The 2026 Games were spread across several locations in northern Italy, combining Milan’s metropolitan setting with the Alpine environment around Cortina and other venues.
The IOC confirmed Milano Cortina as the host of the 2026 Winter Games in 2019.
Italy’s latest hosting achievement therefore pushed it ahead of the countries that remain on three Olympic editions.

Beyond the seven countries at the top of the list, a number of nations have hosted the Games twice or once.

The list becomes more complicated when historical political entities are considered.
For example, the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Moscow Olympics, while Russia hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
They are often grouped together in historical comparisons, as in the ranking above.
The Olympic Hosting Race Is Still Changing
The hierarchy is not static.
The United States will strengthen its lead when Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Australia will also add another Games to its record when Brisbane hosts the 2032 Summer Olympics, while France is set to return as a Winter Olympics host in 2030.
That means the Olympic hosting record will continue to change as new cities and countries take their turn on the world’s biggest sporting stage.
The Countries That Keep Coming Back
Hosting the Olympics is about far more than having stadiums or mountains suitable for sport.
The process requires enormous infrastructure, transportation networks, accommodation, security, funding and political commitment.
That helps explain why the same countries appear repeatedly near the top of the list.
The United States has the widest range of suitable locations and the financial capacity to stage both Summer and Winter Games.
France combines Paris with its Alpine regions, while Japan and Italy have similarly demonstrated that they can host both forms of the Olympics.
For now, however, the United States remains comfortably ahead.
And after Los Angeles 2028, its lead will become even bigger.
