July 28, (THEWILL) – London-based Fulham have completed the signing of Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey, from Ajax, in a noteworthy €22.5 million deal.
The 23-year-old talent has agreed to a contract with Fulham until the summer of 2027, with a club option to extend by a further year. Bassey, a London-born player of Italian descent, progressed through Leicester’s youth ranks before moving to Rangers in 2020. His successful two-year tenure at Rangers, featuring a league title and an impressive UEFA Europa League final run, led to his transfer to Ajax for an initial €23 million.
Bassey, who has earned 10 caps for Nigeria, made his Super Eagles debut during a World Cup qualifier last year. Speaking about joining the club, Bassey said: “I know how big of a club Fulham is, I didn’t have to think much about it.”
The transfer is pending international clearance, which Fulham expect to receive next week. Sporting director Tony Khan shared his delight at Bassey’s signing, considering him a top target for the club. Bassey’s on-field skills and potential for growth align with Fulham’s ambitions, making him a significant addition to the team.
Bassey’s signing represents a significant milestone for Fulham as they reinforce their defensive lineup with the talented Nigerian international. His journey from Leicester to Rangers and subsequently to Ajax illustrates his growth, culminating in this pivotal arrival at Fulham. With the club’s dedication to nurturing young talent, Bassey’s commitment until 2027, with the possibility of extension, bodes well for a promising future.
