June 07, (THEWILL) – The Netherlands crushed Canada 4-0 in an international friendly on Thursday, at Rotterdam. The resounding victory served as an ideal warm-up for the Dutch ahead of this summer’s European Championships.
While the first half remained goalless, the Netherlands enjoyed the lion’s share of chances. Jeremie Frimpong and Brian Brobbey both went close, with Derek Cornelius clearing Frimpong’s effort off the line for Canada.
The floodgates opened after the break as Memphis Depay tapped in from close range following a tantalising Frimpong cross. Frimpong then scored a sublime curling effort before Wout Weghorst capitalised on a goalkeeping error. Virgil van Dijk headed home late on to complete the rout.
While officially a friendly, the convincing win provides a significant morale boost for Ronald Koeman’s side before their Euro 2024 campaign kicks off next month. In contrast, Canada have work to do ahead of the Copa America after this heavy defeat.
