January 17, (THEWILL) – Nigerian athlete Goodness Iredia, a freshman student at Cumberland University (CU), has been honoured as the Mid-South Field Athlete of the Week in his first week of competing in the college indoor season in the US.
Iredia achieved a Personal Best and School Record of 15.59m in the triple jump event at the Commodore Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, earning him a spot in the National Championships in March. Iredia also competed in the high jump, finishing fourth with a height of 1.96m.
The athlete, discovered in Delta State through the state’s developmental programmes in athletics, has made a significant impact in his first week at CU, showcasing his talent and promising future in the sport.
It is another feather in the cap of sporting development programmes in Delta State and is a testament to how these programmes can unearth gems that can be groomed to excellence in different sports. The evidence that it is working can be seen in the ease with which the State has retained its leadership in the National Sports Festivals recently organized.
