May 14, (THEWILL)- Manchester United are set to lose French central defender, Raphael Varane, who announced on Tuesday that he will leave the club at the end of the current 2023/2024 season. The 31-year-old joined United from Real Madrid in 2021 and has made 67 English Premier League appearances, helping the team win the 2023 League Cup.
“It’s been an amazing few years playing for this special club and wearing that shirt,” Varane said in a video posted on social media. The former World Cup winner with France has been sidelined since April due to a muscle injury but aims to return for United’s FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25.
In an official statement, Manchester United thanked Varane for his contributions over the past three years and wished him well in his future endeavours. The club’s fans will have one last chance to bid farewell to the defender when United host Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, for their final home game of the season.
“I’ll see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye for the last game at home this season and it’s going to be an emotional day for me for sure,” Varane added, acknowledging the significance of the occasion.
