September 12, (THEWILL) – South Africa claimed a 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in an international friendly played at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Lyle Foster scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute to give Bafana Bafana a morale-boosting win over a fellow Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Head coach Hugo Broos made seven changes to his starting line-up from the goalless draw with Namibia. DR Congo started brightly but were unable to seriously test goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, who turned up a top-shelf performance.
Foster capitalised on a loose ball in the box from a corner to sweep home with his left foot and give South Africa the lead. Percy Tau and Bathusi Aubaas had further chances to extend the advantage before halftime, while DR Congo threatened on the break without creating clear openings.
DR Congo made two changes just before the hour mark as they searched for an equaliser, putting some pressure on the Bafana defence. However, South Africa almost sealed the win in the 85th minute as Aubaas’ deflected shot was brilliantly tipped onto the post by DR Congo goalkeeper, Lionel Mpasi Nzau.
The victory provides encouragement for Broos as South Africa builds towards the Africa Cup of Nations finals and the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifying in November. Bafana Bafana play Eswatini and Ivory Coast in friendlies next month.
