February 07, (THEWILL) – Former Newcastle and Chelsea midfielder, Christian Atsu, has been found alive and transferred to a hospital after a devastating earthquake hit Turkey.

A 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep early Monday morning and Atsu, who currently plays for Hatayspor, was reported missing along with the club’s Sporting Director, Taner Savut.

However, Hatayspor club Vice President, Mustafa Ozat, provided an update saying that Atsu has been found and transferred to the hospital. Ozat said, “Christian Atsu was removed from the wreckage with injuries. Unfortunately, our Sporting Director, Taner Savut, is still under the rubble.”

The quake has claimed over 4,800 lives and injured thousands more, not only in Turkey but also in neighbouring Syria. Atsu’s teammates, Onur Ergun and Burak Oksuz, have been found alive by rescue teams and other players. Ruben Ribeiro, Ze Luis, and Kerim Alici are also reported to be safe.

Atsu has had a successful career, joining Chelsea from Porto in 2013 and making a permanent move to Newcastle in 2017. He later moved to Saudi side Al Raed in 2021, before joining Hatayspor last summer. The 31-year-old Ghanaian international scored his first goal for Hatayspor in their 1-0 win over Kasimpasa, on Sunday.
