Foden To Miss Pair Of England Nations League Ties Due To COVID-19

June 03, (THEWILL) – After testing positive for COVID-19, Phil Foden will miss England’s UEFA Nations League trips to Hungary and Germany, according to England manager, Gareth Southgate.

England’s Nations League Group A3 opening is against Hungary at the Puskas Arena on Saturday, followed by a match against old rivals, Germany, in Munich on Tuesday, but Foden will miss both games after being forced to leave the Three Lions’ camp.

Foden had a fantastic club season, assisting on 25 goals as Manchester City won their fourth Premier League title in the last six seasons (14 goals,11 assists). He was one of only three City players to score and assist in double figures in all competitions (also Kevin De Bruyne with 19 goals and 14 assists, and Gabriel Jesus with 13 goals and 11 assists).

When Southgate’s team returns to England, he hopes to have the 22-year-old back and available for the games against Italy and Hungary, both of which will be held at Wolves’ Molineux Stadium.

“That very much depends on symptoms and how his breathing is when he gets back into training,” Southgate notes. “Of course, it affects everybody differently. I think every team in the world is getting used to dealing with this kind of situation, really.”
