BEVERLY HILLS, February 24, (THEWILL) – The Ebonyi State House of Assembly was early Tuesday morning struck by a suspicious fire, which according to reports started from the accounts section of the complex before spreading to other areas.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known as at press time. However, policemen have been stationed at the entrance of the complex and have stopped employees and the public from gaining entrance.
The Assembly has been engulfed in a series of crisis in the last one year. On February 11, 2015, the leadership of the House declared four seats vacant following the defection of four members from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to the Labour Party.
The affected members are – Chief Eni Uduma-Chima (PDP-Afikpo South West), Mr. Sam Nwali (PDP-Ikwo North) Mrs. Helen-Nwaobashi (PDP—Abakaliki South) and Mrs. Mabel Aleke (PDP—Ohaukwu South). They however, declared the move orchestrated by the Speaker of House, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku as illegal and unconstitutional.
