August 26, (THEWILL) – Spanish Football Federation President, Luis Rubiales, has been provisionally suspended by FIFA, following his conduct at last week’s women’s World Cup final.
Rubiales refused to resign from his post despite causing an uproar by kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips as she collected her winner’s medal after Spain defeated England 1-0 in Sydney.
Hermoso, on Friday, said she did not consent to the kiss, but Spain’s Football Federation announced plans to take legal action over the forward’s comments about Rubiales.
The situation escalated as FIFA, which opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales on Thursday, announced in a statement that the 46-year-old official is banned “from all football-related activities at national and international level” for an initial 90-day period.
FIFA said the suspension will remain in place until a final decision is reached by the Ethics Committee on the case against Rubiales, who has led the Spanish Federation since 2018.
