September 17, (THEWILL) – Barcelona cruised to a 5-0 victory over Real Betis on Saturday evening, to go top of La Liga ahead of rivals, Real Madrid’s clash with Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Goals from new signings, Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo, helped Barcelona overwhelm Betis at the Camp Nou. Felix opened the scoring midway through the first half with his first goal for Barcelona after some good pressing won the ball high up the pitch. Robert Lewandowski doubled the lead before half-time, finishing off a move involving Felix and Andreas Christensen.
Ferran Torres extended Barcelona’s advantage just after the hour mark, catching Betis goalkeeper, Rui Silva, out with a clever free kick. Raphinha came off the bench to add a fourth, firing in from the edge of the box after a Lewandowski pass.
With the result already settled, Cancelo capped off the rout by beating his marker and driving home Barcelona’s fifth goal late on. It was the right-back’s first goal since arriving on loan from Manchester City.
The emphatic win sends Barcelona top of La Liga heading into Real Madrid’s Sunday evening clash with Real Sociedad. It was a dominant display from Xavi Hernandez’s side, with the new signings excelling on their first starts for the club. They play Royal Antwerp next on Tuesday, in the UEFA Champions League, while Betis travel to face Rangers in the Europa on Thursday.
