July 18, (THEWILL) – Former Netherlands goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, has provided an update on his health condition after being hospitalised for two weeks due to a brain bleed.
Van der Sar, who enjoyed a successful career at both Manchester United and Ajax, shared the news of his progress on social media. Although he is still receiving treatment in the hospital, the 52-year-old expressed his optimism about his recovery and his plans to return home next week.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Van der Sar posted: “I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I’m still in the hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery.” The former goalkeeper’s wife, Annemarie van Kesteren, had previously confirmed that his life was not in immediate danger.
Van der Sar’s illustrious career includes 266 appearances for United, during which he secured three English Premier League titles and the 2008 UEFA Champions League victory. After retiring from professional football, he transitioned into the role of chief executive at Ajax. However, he recently resigned from his position in May following the club’s failure to qualify for the UCL for the first time in 14 years.
In his resignation statement, he reflected his gratitude for the experiences and achievements during his time at Ajax, but emphasised the need to step back, seek rest, and pursue other endeavours.
