January 15, (THEWILL) – The English Premier League announced on Monday, that Everton and Nottingham Forest could face points deductions over alleged breaches of profitability and sustainability regulations. The rules aim to prevent clubs from incurring substantial losses.

According to the league’s statement, both clubs exceeded permitted financial losses for the 2022-2023 season. The cases have now been referred to an independent judicial panel chairperson, who will appoint commissions to decide appropriate sanctions.

Everton and Nottingham Forest released separate statements shortly after, acknowledging the referrals. Everton highlighted that the referral covers previous seasons where they already received a 10-point deduction, which is currently under appeal.

Under the expedited “in-season” process introduced last summer, clubs must submit previous season accounts by 31 December. The EPL then has 14 days to lay a complaint concerning breaches. Clubs have a further 14 days to respond formally.

Hearings must conclude within 12 weeks of Monday’s statement, with appeals ending by May 24. Final decisions will be published by June 1. Both clubs face uncertain futures, with potential points penalties threatening their EPL status.
