December 08, (THEWILL) – Everton earned a much-needed 3-0 win against Newcastle United on Thursday evening, lifting themselves out of the English Premier League relegation zone. In a lacklustre match at Goodison Park, the home side capitalised on two errors from Newcastle right-back Kieran Trippier to grab an important victory.
The Toffees started brightly, peppering the Newcastle goal with shots in the opening minutes. Yet, clear-cut chances were few and far between for both sides in a game littered with wayward finishing. Everton finally made the breakthrough in the 79th when Dwight McNeil swept home the opener after Newcastle failed to clear their lines.
With the visitors appearing increasingly leggy as the match wore on, Trippier gifted Everton a second goal four minutes from time. His loose pass was pounced on by Abdoulaye Doucoure to double the Toffees’ advantage.
In stoppage time, substitute Beto skipped through a tiring Newcastle rearguard to seal a 3-0 triumph. The win sees Everton climb to 17th in the table, above the relegation zone based on goal difference.
With the club having been deducted 10 points earlier in the campaign, the victory offers hope they can avoid the drop if form improves. Newcastle remains 7th, just above mid-table teams after a night to forget.
