June 17, (THEWILL) – Scotland snatched a 2-1 win over Norway in their Group A European Championship 2024 qualifier on Saturday.
Lyndon Dykes and Kenny McLean both struck late goals after Erling Haaland’s penalty put Norway ahead. The win moved Scotland to the top of the group with nine points, six ahead of second-placed Spain, who have played a game less.
Norway dominated possession but struggled to create chances. Haaland, who recently won the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City after breaking the season goal-scoring record of the English Premier League, was bundled over in the box by Ryan Porteous. He fired the ball home low to the goalkeeper’s right one minute after the hour-mark. It looked like it was enough for the win as Haaland was substituted by coach Stale Solbakken in the 84th minute.
However, a defensive error by Leo Ostigard allowed striker Dykes to poke home the equaliser three minutes before the end of normal time. Ostigard then determined the victory for the visitors when he teed up substitute McLean to score the winner two minutes later. Scotland’s unlikely win silenced the home crowd and gave Steve Clarke’s side enough to celebrate.
