Euro 22: Extra-Time Penalty Helps France Scale Over Netherlands To Reach Semi-Final

July 23, (THEWILL) – In the Euro 2022 quarter-final played at Rotherham on Saturday, Eve Perisset’s extra time penalty ended a tight contest between France and the Netherlands, allowing the French advance to the final four.

Despite dominating the first half, the French female national football team was unable to score, as Stephanie van der Gragt made two superb blocks to stop potential goals. Delphine Cascarino, who eventually bested the goalkeeper, could only find the woodwork.

Wendie Renard was particularly tough to defend against and she put pressure on the Netherlands throughout the entirety of the second half as well, but, on a day when the goalkeepers were earning their stripes, Daphne van Domselaar made two outstanding stops to force the quarter-finals into extra time.

It was only fair that when the goal came, it went the way of France. The French ladies finally made a breakthrough during the first extra period when their high pressing led to a penalty awarded in their favour after Kadidiatou Diani was brought down in the area.

Perisset stepped up and unflinchingly converted to score the winner that sees France march into the semi-finals where another tough contest awaits in the German team. They will clash on Wednesday for a shot at reaching the final of the continental women’s football competition.
