November 16, (THEWILL) – Sixteen-year-old Barcelona youngster, Lamine Yamal, was the star of the show as Spain secured a 3-1 away win against Cyprus on Thursday night, to go two points clear at the top of their European Championship qualifying group.
Yamal, who also scored against Georgia earlier in the qualifiers, opened the scoring for Spain after just five minutes in Limassol. Mikel Oyarzabal and Joselu added further first half goals to give Spain a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break.
The visitors did suffer a blow just before half time when Real Sociedad winger, Oyarzabal, was forced off with an apparent calf injury. Cyprus took advantage of some sloppy second half play from Spain to grab a late consolation goal through Kostas Pileas, but it was too little too late.
With Scotland only managing a draw against Georgia, victory propels Spain into pole position to clinch automatic qualification for Euro 2024. They can seal top spot with another win against Georgia on Sunday.
The win continues Spain’s impressive form under manager Luis de la Fuente and shows the depth of young talent emerging in the country. Sixteen-year-old Yamal looks to be the next superstar off the Spanish production line after this accomplished performance on the international stage to go with his club displays.
