Espanyol Confirm Appointment Of Martinez As Manager

May 31, (THEWILL) – Espanyol has announced the appointment of Diego Martinez as their next coach in La Liga.

The Spanish club finished 14th in the 2021-22 League season after regaining promotion to the Spanish top division as second-tier winners. But they fired coach Vicente Moreno earlier this month and have now hired Martinez, who left Granada in May 2021 and he has signed a two-year contract.

Martinez played for Granada for three seasons. In 2019, he brought the squad back to La Liga, placing seventh and reaching the Copa del Rey semi-finals the following season.

In the 2020-21 season, they finished ninth, with a run to the Europa League quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Manchester United. However, he chose not to extend his term at Granada, and the work he had done there was highlighted when the team was relegated this season, finishing 18th.

The 41-year-old manager won 29 of Granada’s 76 La Liga games (38.16 percent), lost 32, and drew the remaining 15, with his team averaging 1.34 points per game.
