September 14, (THEWILL) – Football clubs in the English Premier League will pay homage to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, as top-flight football resumes this weekend for most clubs.

As a sign of respect for Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, the previous round of games was postponed and, with the resumption of the competition, the highest division in England wants to honour “her extraordinary life and contribution to the country and world.”

Black armbands will be worn by players and referees during games from Friday, September 16, to Sunday, September 18, inclusive. Before the game begins, teams will assemble in the centre circle, and, together with spectators, will observe a moment of silence.

The National Anthem will play after that. The Queen will be featured on large screens across the stadiums, and flags will be flown at half-mast. At the 70th-minute mark, fans are urged to cheer on the commemoration of Her Majesty’s 70-year reign.

The first match of the weekend is a doubleheader on Friday night, featuring Nottingham Forest versus Fulham and Aston Villa against Southampton.
