December 17, (THEWILL) – Quite a number of Nigerians were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees by higher institutions of learning within and outside Nigeria in recognition of their contributions in various fields of human endeavour in 2023. Gabriel Afolayan

From his early days as an undergraduate of the University of Ibadan to receiving an honorary doctoral degree in Arts and Culture from Estam University in the Republic of Benin, Gabriel Afolayan, also known as G-Fresh, has carved a niche for himself in the entertainment industry.

With a career spanning over a decade, Afolayan is firmly established as a powerhouse in Nollywood. As a pivotal member of the renowned Afolayan entertainment family, which include Ade Love, Moji Afolayan, Kunle Afolayan, and Aremu Afolayan, his journey began with a Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Tavier Jambari in the 2012 film ‘Hoodrush’.

Afolayan is also a talented singer whose singles, ‘Awelewa’ and ‘Kokoro Ife’ have been in the spotlight for a while. His breakthrough role as Akin in the Super Story Series titled ‘Nnenna’ marked a turning point in his acting career. Notable films, such as ‘Coming from Insanity’, ‘U-Turn’ and ‘Blood Sisters’ showcase the depth of his acting prowess. His multifaceted talent has garnered numerous awards, solidifying his impactful contribution to the entertainment industry.

Abiola Adebayo

Abiola Adebayo is both an accomplished Nollywood actress and film producer that has made her mark on the industry with stellar performances in films, such as ‘Jade’s Cross’ and ‘Tori Owo’. Her journey to success is one long tale of hard work and resilience. At a point in her life, she hawked items in the streets to make ends meet and encountered many challenges from secondary school through university.

Adebayo’s dedication to her craft and her educational pursuits led her to earn a Master’s degree in public administration from the University of Lagos. Her achievements include winning the Best Supporting Actress at the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) Awards in 2020.

The accolades continued in 2021, where she clinched the Face of Nollywood at the City People Award and Best Supporting Actress at the Dallas International Yoruba Movies Awards (DIYMA), as well as an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Leadership and Business from Moren Christian University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. This prestigious award reflects her commitment, not only to the entertainment industry but also to her academic pursuits.

Adetola Abdullateef Adedimeji

Acclaimed actor and filmmaker, Adetola Abdullateef Adedimeji, better known as Lateef Adedimeji, embarked on his acting journey 15 years ago, gaining recognition with his breakthrough role in Yewande Adekoya’s 2013 film, ‘Kudi Klepto’. His cinematic journey has seen him grace the screens in over 100 Nigerian movies.

Graduating from Olabisi Onabanjo University with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, Adedimeji’s educational background did not only complement his artistic endeavors, it laid the foundation for his writing and acting skills. His entertainment odyssey commenced in 2007, initially venturing into dancing before transitioning to the world of acting. His involvement with Orisun TV marked the beginning of his acting career.

Known for portraying emotionally charged characters, he has participated in various stage productions since he was 15. In 2016, he clinched the Best Actor in a Lead Role award at the Best of Nollywood Awards. His nomination for the 2015 Most Promising Actor of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards attests to his rising profile in the industry. The climax came when Estam University in Cotonou, Benin Republic awarded him an honorary doctoral degree, an accolade that reflects his profound impact and dedication to the art of acting.

Adebowale Adedayo

A force to reckon with in the Nigerian entertainment scene, Adebowale Adedayo, a.k.a Mr Macaroni, is not just an actor and content creator but also a fervent citizen activist. Trained as a thespian, he rose to fame through his comic skits on social media, embodying characters like the political sugar daddy ‘Daddy Wa’ and the sadistic lecturer, ‘Professor Hard Life.’

Adedayo’s catchphrases, including ‘Ooin,’ ‘Freaky freaky,’ and ‘You are doing well,’ have become ingrained in popular culture. Beyond comedy, he leverages his satirical works for social justice advocacy, using humour to shed light on pressing issues and to champion human rights. Notably, during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, he fearlessly spoke out against police brutality, even after becoming a victim himself.

Initially starting his career in Nollywood, Debo transitioned to online comedy, creating content that addresses real issues in Africa. As ‘Daddy Wa,’ he draws attention to the struggles and weaknesses of individuals in positions of power. His satirical skits go beyond laughter, serving as a platform to discuss social and political matters, including bad governance, civic responsibility, and human rights. He was recently honored with a Doctor of Creative Writing degree from Precious Cornerstone University in Ibadan, Oyo State. This is a mark of recognition for his skill as an entertainer and his commitment to creative expression. He received another honorary doctoral degree (Doctor of Arts) from Hill City University, Benin Republic.

Pete Edochie

Seasoned Nollywood actor, Chief Pete Edochie, stands tall as one of the country’s most gifted actors. Although initially recognised as a seasoned administrator and broadcaster, his rose to prominence in the 1980s when he played the iconic role of Okonkwo in the Nigerian Television Authority’s adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s timeless novel, ‘Things Fall Apart.’

A devout Catholic, Edochie was awarded the distinguished Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) in 2003. His journey into the entertainment world began in radio broadcasting in 1967 at the age of 20. Starting as a junior programmes assistant, he quickly rose through the ranks to become a director at Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS). However, he left ABS due to government interference in the FM station’s affairs. Transitioning into the movie industry, he featured in ‘Things Fall Apart,’ earning international acclaim and winning an award.

In 2005, the Actors Guild of Nigeria imposed a one-year ban on Edochie and other actors for allegedly charging exorbitant fees to take part in films. In recognition of his significant contributions, Chief Pete Edochie was honoured by representatives of the International School of Technology and Management (ISTM) University in Togo, cementing his legacy as a true icon in the Nigerian film industry.

Nancy Isime

A versatile actress, model and media personality, Nancy Isime has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Having faced the challenges of losing her mother at a young age, Isime’s resilience and determination have shaped her remarkable journey. In 2011, she started an acting career with a notable role in the TV series ‘Echoes.’

Beyond acting, she ventured into television presenting, showcasing her talent in various shows. Her ascent continued when she replaced Toke Makinwa as the presenter of the popular show ‘Trending’ on HipTV in 2016. She also showcased her talent as a Master of Ceremony.

Isime’s rise to the global stage occurred in 2022 when she starred in the Netflix original series ‘Blood Sisters,’ produced by Mo Abudu’s Ebonylife TV studio. Chukwuemeka Frodd Okoye

The charismatic former Big Brother Naija housemate recently achieved a significant milestone by receiving an honorary doctoral degree in Philosophy and Business Management from Ecole Superieure De Gestion Et De Technology (ESGT) University in the Republic of Benin.

Known for his memorable participation in the All-Stars edition of BBNaija, Chukwuemeka Frodd Okoye was the second runner-up in the 2019 ‘Pepper Dem’ edition, eventually won by Mercy Eke. Since his departure from the show in 2019, he has delved into investment and real estate, showcasing his business acumen and strategic mindset.

Okoye has also shown commitment to social causes. He previously revealed plans to establish a foundation for single mothers, highlighting his desire to make a positive impact beyond the realms of reality television. The honorary degree from the Beninois institution underscores his approach to life, blending his entertainment background with a commitment to business and philanthropy.

Amarachi Amusi

Amarachi Amusi, a content creator widely known as Ashmusy on social media, has carved a niche for herself on social media. Her impact extends beyond the realm of entertainment through her entrepreneurial journey. Ashmusy obtained an honorary doctoral degree in Real Estate Management from Prowess University Delaware, USA, showcasing her commitment to both her artistic and business pursuits. In 2018, she switched to skit-making after national youth service, driven by her initial aspiration to be part of Nollywood. However, her keen observations of certain aspects of the industry that didn’t align with her values made her switch to content creation.

Anita Natacha Akide

Anita Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, embodies the essence of a dynamic media personality, entrepreneur and compassionate philanthropist. Her journey, marked by achievements and impact, transcends the realms of reality television. Tacha made her mark as a housemate in Big Brother Naija (season 4). Driven by a profound commitment to social causes, Tacha founded the Natacha Akide Foundation (NAF) in 2020. With the motive to serve the underprivileged, she initiated the Pad For Every Girl (PEG) project, dedicated to educating every girl about female hygiene.

Tacha’s philanthropic efforts extended to addressing hunger issues among families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing her compassion and proactive approach to societal challenges. In 2022, she took her advocacy to River State, encouraging her community to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) for the 2023 general election, emphasising civic participation.

Pastor Blessed Uzochikwa

He is a minister of the gospel and husband of gospel artiste, Mercy Chinwo. He recently bagged a honorary doctorate in Technology, Leadership and Innovation from Myles Leadership University. The degree was in recognition of his passion and dedication to innovative leadership, transformational entrepreneurship and philanthropy, especially in the field of technology. He hopes to continue inspiring and empowering others to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact in the world.

Tewa Onasanya

Tewa Onasanya, publisher of female lifestyle and wellness publication, ‘Exquisite’ magazine, joined the growing list of Nigerians bagging honorary doctoral degrees. The founder of ELOY Awards was recently decorated with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership and Performance Management from the prestigious Institute of Leadership, Manpower and Management Development. She was honoured for her work as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, mindset stylist with 20 years of experience of impact.

The doctorate is based on her work experience in running successful businesses, inspiring and empowering people, provision of free screening for cervical cancer, making a massive impact, and coaching entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and experts to intentionally build structures and apply mindset strategies to enable them to take control of their businesses/careers to achieve their goals as a mindset coach.

Ironically, Onasanya wanted to be a doctor when she was younger, but fate had other things in stock for her. A graduate of Pharmacology from the University of Portsmouth with a Diploma in Fashion Journalism from the College of Media and Publishing, she is also a certified Mindfulness Coach, a certified Law of Attraction practitioner, a Cherie Blair Foundation mentor, an Enterprise Nation mentor and an ELOY Awards Foundation mentor. In addition she runs EMAC Foundation for cervical cancer prevention.

Queen Temitope Ogunwusi

Queen Temitope Morenike Enitan-Ogunwusi, one of the six wives of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, received an honorary doctorate in Science (humanities) from Bradley University, USA. The recognition is a testament to her commitment to ending poverty, promoting social justice, empowering African communities and creating lasting change through her Hope Alive Initiative, a charity she set up with her husband to provide amenities to underserved communities.

A cerebral queen, she has a diploma in Linguistics and Data Processing from the University of Lagos and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the same university. Queen Temitope is a certified alumnus of several universities, including the University of Oxford, United Kingdom; INSEAD Business School, Fontainebleau, France; University of Cambridge, Judge Business School, United Kingdom; and Harvard Kennedy School of Government in the United States. She has vast experience working in both the public and private sectors. She has also worked in the media as was the anchor and host of the Lagos State Ministry of Health Public Health Advocacy Program, ‘Health-Wise’ which was on air for four years.

During the Babatunde Fashola administration, Ogunwusi was the Personal Assistant to the late Secretary to the State Government, Princess Aderenle Adeniran-Ogunsanya. A princess from Ijebuland, she was formerly married before she went separate ways with her husband.

Rosemary Osula

Controversial socialite and businesswoman, Rosemary Osula, who now wishes to be known as Princess Hadessah Osula Mku-Atu, recently added another feather to her cap when she was conferred with a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in Business Administration by Crescent University, Abeokuta during its combined 12th and 13th convocation.

The institution awarded her the honorary degree in recognition of her contributions to education, healthcare and social service through Rosula Foundation, a non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO). Rosula, as she is fondly called, once dominated the social scene. After ending her marriage to a Benue State-born politician, Rosula married the late Senator Buruji Kashamu from Ogun State. The marriage ended after he instituted an alleged child trafficking case against her. The shame was too much for her to bear, forcing her to relocate to Abuja.

Now in her third marriage, to a younger man, Rosula seems to have bounced back in the business world. She now plays big in the real estate sector via her Nehemiah Grace Limited, Sharon Properties Ltd and Jezreel Grace Villa and Apartment Ltd. She also has investments in the financial services sector, telecommunications, manufacturing and tourism.

Henry Dele Alake

A former Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, now Minister for Solid Minerals, Henry Dele Alake bagged a honorary doctorate from Caleb University, Imota, Lagos State earlier in the year. The journalist cum technocrat who was the Director of Media and Strategic Communication of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation was honoured for his contributions to the growth of journalism, pro-democracy crusade, democratic development, and good governance in the country.

Alake’s feats as an illustrious journalist, media statesman and astute administrator who has a record of excellence, character and core values were commended as part of the reasons he was chosen for the doctoral degree. A communication strategist who worked with former President-elect, Moshood Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party, SDP, his contributions as the APC-PCC Director of Media and Strategic Communication was also applauded.

Wole Olanipekun and Bisi Onasanya

The duo of Wole Olanipekun, SAN, and Bisi Onasanya both bagged doctoral degrees from the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti in Ekiti State simultaneously. While Olanipekun, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, received an honorary doctorate in Constitutional Law, Onasanya, the former Managing Director and Chief Executive of First Bank, bagged a honorary doctorate in Finance.

Olanipekun was honoured for his contribution to the development of the law profession in the state, getting appointed as visiting professor of the University and donated the sum of N10m to the 20 best law graduates of the institution, Onasanya was honoured for his contribution to the Banking and Finance sector. The financial expert, who is now into real estate business, equally gave monetary rewards to students who performed excellently in their respective Banking and Finance Departments across Nigerian universities.

Eleso Moyosoreoluwa

Media personality and versatile professional Eleso Moyosoreoluwa, celebrated for her achievements in Brand PR and Communication, has been honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Communications and Creative Arts by Highstone Global University in Texas, U.S.A.

With a remarkable career spanning over a decade, Eleso has excelled as a media professional, filmmaker, content creator, brand communication executive, and coach. Her expertise in Radio, TV, and Media Production is complemented by several certifications that have played a pivotal role in her career growth. The conferment ceremony, a testament to her outstanding contributions to the field, took place at the University of Lagos on Saturday, November 4th, 2023. Eleso Moyosoreoluwa’s journey reflects not only her dedication to media and communication but also her continuous pursuit of excellence, making her a true inspiration in the industry.
