January 18, (THEWILL) – A Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Maitama, has granted the request of a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to travel out of Abuja.
Justice Hamza Muazu granted the order on Thursday, following an application brought by the former Apex Bank Chief, for a variation of bail conditions. However, Emefiele must remain in the country.
THEWILL reports that Emefiele, who is standing trial on a six-count charge bordering on alleged procurement fraud to the tune of N1.2bn, was released from Kuje Correctional Centre on December 23, 2023, 34 days after the judge granted him bail.
Ruling on his bail application on November 22, Justice Muazu, who restricted Emefiele’s movement to the court’s jurisdiction, ordered that he must obtain the court’s permission before he may be permitted to leave the court’s jurisdiction or outside the country.
The court had also directed Emefiele to deposit all his travel documents with the court while he produced two sureties with landed properties in Abuja.
