June 06, (THEWILL) – Egypt beat a resolute Guinea 1-0, thanks to Mostafa Mohamed’s deflected strike in the 87th minute, as the Pharaohs began their qualification for next year’s TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations on a winning note.
Guinea appeared to be heading for a home draw, but Mohamed stole the three points at the Cairo International Stadium, giving new head coach Ehab Galal the perfect start to his new job.
The Pharaohs deserved all three points since they were the superior offensive team, even if they struggled to find the back of the net. For much of the game, the North African giants continued to play the ball in Guinea’s half, pushing for an opener before Mohamed found the back of the net in the 87th minute.
The Egyptians will now focus on their second group match against Ethiopia on Thursday, while Guinea will look to bounce back against Malawi. Egypt now sits second in Group D with three points, the same as Malawi, who began their campaign with a 2-1 win over Ethiopia at home.
