December 20, (THEWILL) – Fulham booked their place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time in the club’s history after a dramatic 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory over Everton on Wednesday night.
The match had finished 1-1 after extra time, with Michael Keane’s own goal cancelled out by a late equaliser from Everton substitute, Beto.
The decisive moment came when Idrissa Gana Gueye struck the post with Everton’s sixth penalty. Fulham captain, Tosin Adarabioyo, then stepped up to slam home the winning spot-kick, sparking jubilant celebrations amongst the visiting supporters.
It was heartbreak for Everton, who were chasing a first EFL Cup semi-final appearance since 2016. This was the fourth time in six seasons that the Toffees have exited the competition on penalties. The match had seen them extend a four-game winning run, only for their hopes to be shattered in the cruelest fashion.
For Fulham, already climbing higher in the English Premier League, this caps a memorable 2023 for the West London club. Reaching the final four of a major cup competition would have exceeded their wildest expectations at the start of the campaign.
