January 08, (THEWILL) – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has reportedly invited the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, over alleged N585 million scam.

Edu was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, to pave way for her investigation by the EFCC.

While EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, has not confirmed the invitation, reports said the anti-graft agency invited Edu shortly after she was suspended by the president on Monday.

The Punch quoted an EFCC source as saying that Edu was being expected to appear at the EFCC’s office, Abuja, for questioning after she had been served with the letter to appear.

THEWILL reports that Edu’s suspension, followed the disbursement of N585,198,500.00 Grant for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos and Ogun States, into a personal account.

The instruction for the payment, contained in a leaked letter dated December 20, 2023, was signed by the suspended minister.

Titled: “Mandate for Payment of Grant for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos and Ogun States Respectively”, Edu instructed the accountant-general to transfer the sum above to the UBA account of one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.

While the Accountant-General of the Federation in a statement on Saturday, said her office declined the Minister’s request, Edu had insisted that she followed due process.
