October 07, (THEWILL) – A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room after reportedly engaging the services of a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.

Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, was said to have died on Monday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

The circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear as of Wednesday, with the Edo State Police Command commencing an investigation and arresting three persons in connection with the incident.

The police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, saying the command received a report at about 8pm on Monday that the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to the police, the woman was later asked by the lecturer to leave the hotel room to purchase water for him.

Ikoedem said Jacob returned to the room only to discover Uwuigbe lying lifeless.

She subsequently raised the alarm, leading to the involvement of the police.

The police spokesperson said the hotel owner, manager and the woman involved had been arrested and detained for questioning as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police,” Ikoedem said, adding that the arrests were part of efforts to determine what transpired before the lecturer was found dead.

Uwuigbe’s remains have since been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation.

Reacting to the development, the management of Ambrose Alli University confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident had no connection with the university or any official university activity.

The university spokesperson, Otunba Aladenika, said the lecturer’s death occurred outside the institution’s premises.

He also clarified that the woman involved in the incident was not a student of the university.

According to the university, the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were a private matter and should not be associated with the institution.
