Echegini Robbed As Super Falcons Held By Cameroon

February 25, (THEWILL) – A controversial disallowed goal was the major talking point as Nigeria’s Super Falcons were held to a 0-0 draw by Cameroon, in the first leg of their Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier, in Douala, on Friday.

The Super Falcons created better chances and dominated proceedings for large periods. However, they were left aggrieved after having a legitimate goal ruled out by the referee just after half-time.

Juventus star, Jennifer Onyi Echegini thought she had fired Nigeria ahead in the 47th minute. However, she was incorrectly flagged for offside, despite video replays clearly showing she was onside when scoring what should have given Nigeria the advantage.

The contentious decision proved very costly. Echegini went on to tee up veteran striker Asisat Oshoala, later in the game, but Africa Women’s Footballer of the Year missed a great opportunity to grab an away goal for Nigeria.

In the end, neither side could make the breakthrough. Still, the 0-0 draw leaves the tie very much in the balance, heading into the decisive second leg on home soil for the Super Falcons. However, they will feel hard done after having a good goal chalked off through an officiating error.
