SAN FRANCISCO, February 27, (THEWILL) – The Ebonyi State House of Assembly Friday moved to impeach state Governor, Mr. Martins Elechi with the approval of a motion to remove the governor from office on charges of stealing and misappropriation of state funds.

The motion, which had majority support of members of the assembly, was tabled by the Acting Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Ogbonnaya Francis Nwifruru, who read out a list of offences and complaints against the governor who has been in a lengthy battle with the assembly.

The Assembly last week constituted a panel to investigate the governor following petitions it received from various stakeholders accusing him and the executive of contract inflations amongst other infractions.

The panel completed its investigations earlier this week and found Elechi culpable even though the governor on Friday after the impeachment notice was served maintained that some powerful members of his party at the national level, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Uche Sekondus; spokesman of the PDP, Olisa Metuh; and former governor Sam Egwu, were behind the impeachment plot.

He alleged that the men had offered monies to members of the house to impeach him from office in order to have a firm control of the treasury of the state.

With just barely three months to the end of his tenure, Elechi faces impeachment if found guilty by an impeachment panel expected to be constituted next week.
