June 28, (THEWILL) – Armand Duplantis, the Swedish athlete and current Olympic and world champion in pole vault, achieved a new personal best at the Golden Spike athletics meet in the Czech Republic, on Tuesday.
Duplantis surpassed his previous record by one centimetre, clearing a height of 6.12 metres. This improvement comes after his impressive 6.11m jump in the Netherlands earlier this month and his world record-setting performance of 6.22m in France back in February. Although he faced colder conditions than desired, Duplantis was satisfied with his performance: “I think 6.12 was pretty much about the highest I was going to make today. I’m pretty satisfied. I liked the way I was jumping.”
In addition to Duplantis’ remarkable achievement, other notable results were recorded at the Ostrava meet. South Africa’s Akani Simbine won the men’s 100m race with a time of 9.98 seconds, finishing ahead of Italy’s Samuele Ceccarelli, the European 60m indoor champion, who completed the race in 10.15s. Andre De Grasse, the Canadian Olympic 200m champion, secured third place with a season’s best time of 10.21s.
Ethiopian athlete Lamecha Girma, the current world record holder in the 3,000m steeplechase, displayed his versatility by winning the 1500m race with a personal best time of 3 minutes and 33.15s. Furthermore, Diribe Welteji, also from Ethiopia, emerged victorious in the women’s 1500m event, with three Ethiopian athletes claiming podium positions by finishing the race in under four minutes.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, the reigning Olympic champion from Puerto Rico, triumphed in the women’s 100m hurdles, clocking a time of 12.42s.
