D’Tigress Beat Egypt, Secure Quarter-Final Spot In AfroBasket Tournament

July 30, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, triumphed over Egypt with a resounding 83-65 victory, earning their spot in the quarter-finals stage of the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.

The BK Arena witnessed a riveting match as D’Tigress dominated the first two quarters with scores of 18-10 and 24-13. Although Egypt mounted a fierce comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Nigeria 19-14, the reigning champions held their ground in a tightly contested fourth quarter, ultimately clinching a well-deserved win.

Amy Okonkwo led the charge for D’Tigress, demonstrating her exceptional skills with an impressive 29 points and 13 rebounds. Murjanatu Musa added her brilliance, contributing 18 points, while Nicole Enabosi added 10 points to her name. With this victory, Nigeria achieved a third consecutive win against Egypt in the AfroBasket tournament, having previously triumphed over them in 2015 and 2017.

While Nigeria advances to the quarter-finals, Egypt and DR Congo must now face a qualifying round to determine their fate in the tournament, either joining Nigeria in the next stage or bidding farewell to their AfroBasket journey. As D’Tigress continue to display their quality on the court, their remarkable displays set them apart as formidable contenders for an astonishing fourth consecutive continental title.

With their early passage to the quarter-finals, they have left fans eager to witness more exhilarating displays of skill and teamwork in the upcoming matches.
