July 18, (THEWILL) – The Department of State Services, on Tuesday, stirred another controversy over the continued detention of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Central Bank Governor.
THEWILL had, on Monday, reported a suit filed by a consortium of lawyers challenging the detention of Emefiele despite a court order for his release.
In a committal to prison proceedings filed on Monday, at a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the lawyers numbering about 60, asked the court to commit the Director General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi, to prison, over an alleged violation of multiple judgments and orders of the court directing the release of Emefiele from custody.
Led by Maxwell Opara, counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, the lawyers asked the court to commit the DSS DG to prison until he purges himself of the contempt.
However, reacting to the court action on Tuesday, the DSS, in a tweet, described Opara as a charge and bail, overzealous uninformed IPOB/ESN lawyer.
The tweet reads: “Charge and bail, overzealous uninformed IPOB/ESN lawyer Maxwell Okpara mobilises other like-minded lawyers against DGSS. Futile Efforts. Well, Nigerians, beware! This is in bad faith. Transferred aggression.
“A Biafran Republic agitator and Outlawed IPOB counsel defending the suspended CBN Governor. Is IPOB defending one of theirs?
“What a contradiction….hmmm…what’s the connection? Is someone telling us something? May Maxwell be properly educated on points of law, please.”
